About Us

A coal yard that became Midcoast Maine's first marina.

The Crew
  • 1967

Knight Marine Service is established. Horatio Knight, with his wife Alice, has a vision for the old coal yard and sets out to bring the first marina/boatyard to the Midcoast area.

  • 1968

Horatio purchases the first Marine Travelift and begins hauling and storing boats for the winter.

  • 1971

KMS also starts out as a boat-building operation, with Horatio building his own working tugboat.

  • 1977

A full-service dock is added, with a chandlery and gas and diesel pumps.

  • 1979

Two inside boat-storage buildings are added, along with local boat transportation.

  • 2000s

The business flourishes, with over 150 boats stored for the winter.

  • 2005

Horatio passes away, leaving the business in his family's hands. With a capable crew, KMS expands again with a new state-of-the-art Paint, Repair, Varnish building.

  • 2006

The Penobscot Bay Area Chamber of Commerce recognizes KMS with its Commercial/Industrial Improvement Award.

Knight Marine Service continues to look for ways to be a vital and always-improving company, essential to growth in the marine industry.

To Do in the Area

Step off the dock into downtown Rockland.

Within walking distance is downtown Rockland's Main Street — antique shops, sporting goods, book stores, flowers and gifts, music and art galleries, hardware and kitchenware, motels, clothing, jewelry, photo supplies and much more. It's a 5-minute walk to downtown and a 3-minute walk to a motel with restaurant and lounge.

Rockland is home of the world-famous Farnsworth Museum, shop and homestead, and the new Wyeth Center. The Strand Cinema has two theatres showing first-run movies nightly, and the renovated 1920s-era Strand Theater hosts live concerts and classic films. Explore our working waterfront on Fisherman's Wharf, walk the half-mile boardwalk south of the Public Landing, or walk a mile out the Rockland Breakwater (it might be easier to sail out from KMS!).

Festivals: the Maine Lobster Festival is always the Wednesday to Sunday of the first weekend of August that includes a Saturday. The North Atlantic Blues Festival is the weekend following the 4th of July — the premier event of the area, bringing many boats and many people.

With a car your choices are limitless: Owls Head Transportation Museum is five miles away, Camden is 8 miles north on Route 1, Thomaston 5 miles south, and the Knox County Airport and Owls Head Lighthouse a 10-minute drive. Whatever you like to do — see one of us and we'll help.
